Today as I was walking around, observing the creative ideas that my third graders were coming up with, I happened to stop and talk with Julianna. The third graders were busy working on their portfolio folders. I complimented her on her progress. Then she explained to me that she had turned her A into a cat. She said she had messed up when she was tracing her A and made a line that went up off the top. Then she thought about what she could make it into and she decided to make that line be part of an ear...then she added another ear, a nose, some paws, eyes and of course whiskers...and now her A is a super cool little kitty! I love when kids use their imaginations and especially when they make a mistake like Julianna did, and think of a creative way to turn it into something beautiful. I always do a little mini lesson on this concept at the beginning of the year, so you can bet when we get to that, I will be using Julianna's folder as an example. Maybe this little story will inspire you to think of a creative solution next time you make a mistake!
This week in the ART STUDIO we will be spending some time going over our rules & expectations and procedures for coming into the room, cleaning up, lining up, etc. We will begin to work on our ART PORTFOLIOS. A PORTFOLIO is where you will store your drawings, paintings and collages during the school year. At the end of the school year you will be able to take your PORTFOLIO home!
I am looking forward to seeing all my former artists and meeting those of you who are new to Memorial. It's going to be a great year in the ART STUDIO! |
