Mr. Snider and I went over to Robinson on Thursday afternoon and painted tiles with the 5th graders. It was so fun to see those kids again! Im glad next year I get to be their art teacher one more year! Here are a few pictures from last week.
Last week several classes completed their tiles, but we still have more to go!

Students in third grade are learning all about Stop Motion Animation and will be working in groups to create an animation over the next nine weeks.
Today we learned about what Stop Motion Animation is all about and saw some very cool examples on animation with objects, people, clay and paper. Check this video out. We are realizing that there is a lot involved in creating animations! Wow. This project will teach us a lot of patience! Each class made a short animation, we wanted to share with you! Room 16 Room 17 Room 20 First graders recently got to create snowflakes in Art class on the iPads using the My Flake app. They had a great time experimenting with this app, while sharpening their skills with the iPad. Hope you enjoy our little snowstorm!
Students really enjoy receiving comments about their artwork on Artsonia! I just found this awesome comment that one of our third graders received from her Mom. Parents and students, please take time to show your support for the artists in your lives! Sending a comment is free and very simple to do. Here is the link our East Jackson Elementary Art Gallery on Artsonia: http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=64720 Search for the Artist you want to find by entering their name in the box. Click on his/her gallery. Select the work of art you wish to compliment. Click on the speech bubble that looks like this: Then, click "Enter a Web Comment", type your comment, check the appropriate boxes and submit! Comments must be approved by parents before they can be seen publicly on the gallery page. Parents who have active Artsonia accounts will receive an email that will require a click to either approve or remove the comment.
When an artist receives 5 or more comments, the little award symbol on his/her gallery page will light up blue! Let's show these kids how much we appreciate their creative efforts! We have the opportunity to participate in the Cascades Renovation Project's Fundraising Contest. Schools from Jackson County were invited to create murals which will be displayed in the community during the fundraising campaign. Members of the Jackson Community will be able to donate money toward the Renovation Project and contribute towards their favorite banner! We have several kids, grades K-12 who have helped create our mural. It's almost done! We've been working very hard to finish it up. Check out some of our pictures.
In the Spring, third graders from Ms. Cannon's class had the opportunity to work together on a county wide piece of artwork. Students were given a portion of the picture you see above and had to mix colors and, using a Qtip, painted their portion using a pointillism technique (dots). The pieces were then arranged to create this huge mural that is a tribute to Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry Mural which is permanently installed at the DIA. This collaborative artwork, which students grades K-12 from all over Jackson County contributed to, is now hanging at Art Prize, at the Coit Creative Arts Academy in Grand Rapids. I think it's pretty awesome that EJ students had a hand in creating this piece of artwork that thousand of people will see during Art Prize!
During the month of April, we focused on Still Lifes in the drawing center. We were able to borrow some taxidermy animals from Mr King as well as a few figurines and some flowers. Our still life table was a round table with things all around it. Students could sit around the table and find the point of view they liked the best. Our students were very enthusiastic about drawing their still lifes. Many students drew one or more of the animals and then added their own artistic touch by creating backgrounds and filling their papers with some amazing details! Please take a look at our gallery page where I have uploaded the student's artwork inspired by the still life set up. Ryan chose to draw the angel figurine that I had placed on the table. Look at the amazing detail. He spent a lot of time working on the feathers on the wings and all of his classmates were super impressed!
This morning a class of 2nd graders were busy making all kinds of things when I noticed a group of girls in the collage center were busy with some very large pieces. Before too long, i was realizing that they were actually creating "clothes" and we used this as an opportunity to discuss with the rest of the class the job of being a fashion designer. The girls paraded their new fashions in a little fashion show for their classmates and then the rest of the class enjoyed commenting on their work and asking questions about it. These 2nd graders were pretty excited about Fashion Design
