Welcome to the 2014/2015 School Year!
Thank you for visiting the Memorial Art Studio Website! I'm so glad you're here. Please check out our class blog and our student gallery (coming soon)! I've also added a fun Art Links page that your kids will enjoy. Many of the links on this page reinforce Art concepts and are related to what they are learning in the Studio!
A LITTLE ABOUT MRS DUROCHER:
I began teaching art at East Jackson in 1998. I have taught art at both Memorial and Bertha Robinson. This year I am teaching art full time at Memorial. I am blessed to work with amazing students, staff and parents and I think I have the greatest job in the world! I get to come to work every day and create art with my students. Together we look at art, discuss artwork and create!
ABOUT THE ART STUDIO:
Our artists will have the opportunity to create art in an Art Studio that I've set up just for them! I think your kid will love it! Our art room is be called the “Memorial Art Studio” and will have centers set up to explore drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, bookmaking, architecture, digital arts, weaving and 3-D construction. The students will learn to think, plan & work like “real artists” and will be given choice in the projects they will be making. Through my years here at East Jackson, I have witnessed the incredible talent and creativity of our students and I am excited to see how they will flourish this year in the Memorial Art Studio.
Since students will be able to choose what they make and how they make their art, it would be helpful to discuss plans for their artwork at home. Please encourage them to come to the Art Studio with their ideas (in their head or on paper) so that they can get right to work on their projects. Students will create a variety of projects in the Art Studio this year including experiments, explorations and sketches. They will also create “showcase” pieces which I will keep at school to display in our Spring Art Show at the Eastern Branch Jackson District Library or at school. All artwork will be returned by the last week of school.
When your student comes home with something they have created in the Art Studio, some questions you may want to ask are: What did you learn while making it? What do you like most about it? What inspired you? What would you do differently next time? And it is always fun to ask, “Can you teach me how to do that?” and make art along with your child.
I am looking for a few parents who would be interested in being art studio helpers. If you have a
couple of hours to give a week, I would love for you to come and help us stay organized and assist the students in the centers.
I am always available if you have any questions or comment. I can be reached through my email:
[email protected] or by calling the school, 784-7131. I look forward to an inspiring and creative year with your young artist!
