2nd and 3rd grade students have been working to fill our board with 3" Zentangled tiles for Valentine's Day. We have a couple of Zentangle books and a notebook full of our favorite Zentangle patterns. Oh...you don't know what Zentangles are? Well...check out this video for an easy explanation and some project inspiration. Zentangles can be created by anyone! Try this fun game. Here are some of the students' Zentangles: Some students are even making up their own Zentangle patterns!

I love it when kids think like an artist...and this little installation caught my eye yesterday. "Surfer Dude" was created by a third grader who was working in our collage center. I was impressed that Kaedon thought to use the air blowing out of our classroom heater as part of his creation. Check it out: When I played "What does a fox say?" for my first graders, they already knew the song and some of the dance moves. We discussed what they already knew about foxes. I was surprised, actually, since many of them had never even seen a fox before. They knew quite a bit about foxes.
For our art lesson, we first talked about the fox's fur. We tried to think of how we could do that with paint. We decided to use the end of paintbrushes to scratch in the fur lines after we had painted our papers. That was a really messy art day! We had orange paint everywhere...sorry if it came home on anyone's clothes. The following art class, we learned how to draw a fox using lines and shapes. My first grade artists did an awesome job with this. They are so cute. We also discussed what they think a fox says. I asked them "if he could, what would he say to you?" We had some pretty interesting answers along with lyrics from the song, of course. Students chose what they wanted to have their fox say and copied it into the talk balloons. We ended our classes with the video. So much fun! One of our students' favorite activities in the studio is when we clean up early and the students are given an opportunity to share their artwork with the class. We discuss how to talk about artwork and try to use our Art Vocabulary words, too. Students enjoy receiving attention for their work and compliments from their classmates.
Yes, we do have blocks in the Art Studio! They are part of our Architecture Center. In the Architecture Center, students practice being architects. They design, invent, build and problem solve. Block aren't all they have access to in our Architecture center, though. We also have pattern blocks, architectural magnets, Lincoln Logs, and four different kinds of building blocks...as well as a small assortment of animals. In Kindergarten and First Grade, students are given time to choose to "play" with blocks when they are finished with their work. In Second Grade, more as expected of them if they choose this center during their studio time. Students must create blueprints or drawings of their buildings as well as fill out a reflection sheet about what they built. So it might look like playing at first glance, but I promise you, there is a lot of learning and creative thinking going on here! The architecture center is a very popular center in the studio. We just opened it this week, and already many amazing buildings and structures have been created! I have uploaded several of them to Artsonia if you'd like to see what our artists are creating in the Architecture Center.
We discovered a fun site today where we could carve pumpkins online! The students were very enthusiastic about this and had a great time trying out their own creative designs. Try it out for yourself!
Our Kindergartners have been learning about the 3 Primary Colors! Today I introduced them to Piet Mondrian. We looked at Mondrian paintings like this one: CLICK on the picture for an Audio description of this painting. We also learned to make straight lines with our rulers. You can create your own Mondrian style painting HERE!
There are so many ways to create art...especially with new technology. This week in the art studio, some students are getting to try taking their artwork (drawing or painting) into an App called WordFoto and transforming it into something really cool! We really like this app a lot because it helps us think of descriptive words to tell about what we created. Here are a couple of examples: Check out more DIGITAL ARTWORK in our gallery!
On September 17th, we celebrated Constitution Day. Students that had art on that day had the opportunity to create a poster for the Constitution Day contest. We learned a little about the Constitution and we used symbols that remind us of our country and our freedom in our drawings. We are still finishing these up but take a minute to visit our gallery page and see some of the great drawings our students did!
This week first graders are learning about the artist, Mary Cassatt who is famous for her paintings of women and children. We talked about portraits and our families. We looked at some of Mary Cassatt's paintings in a book. Our first graders were very interested in some of the details of some of the paintings that portrayed life a little different from theirs...like the family riding in a carriage pulled by horses. Our first grade artists are drawing a portrait of their families. We talked about how to make the people different sizes based on how old their family members might be. We also discussed what makes each one of us unique & different from the other people in our family and how we can show those differences in our drawings. We have some beginnings of some wonderful masterpieces! I can't wait to see them once they are colored!
