Yes, we do have blocks in the Art Studio! They are part of our Architecture Center. In the Architecture Center, students practice being architects. They design, invent, build and problem solve. Block aren't all they have access to in our Architecture center, though. We also have pattern blocks, architectural magnets, Lincoln Logs, and four different kinds of building blocks...as well as a small assortment of animals.
In Kindergarten and First Grade, students are given time to choose to "play" with blocks when they are finished with their work. In Second Grade, more as expected of them if they choose this center during their studio time. Students must create blueprints or drawings of their buildings as well as fill out a reflection sheet about what they built.

So it might look like playing at first glance, but I promise you, there is a lot of learning and creative thinking going on here! The architecture center is a very popular center in the studio. We just opened it this week, and already many amazing buildings and structures have been created! I have uploaded several of them to Artsonia if you'd like to see what our artists are creating in the Architecture Center.
